INTRODUCTION TO REIKI
| The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is
Japanese: rei meaning universally or spiritually
guided and ki meaning 'life force energy'. The art or therapeutic practice of Reiki provides us with a very effective way of channelling this energy to promote healing on a physical, mental and emotional level. The expression of the life force energy in the form of Reiki was developed towards the end of the 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui, who undertook a search for the secret of healing that lasted 14 years. A quest which culminated in the discovery of four symbols in an ancient sutra (sacred text) and a mystical experience. During the experience he was given the meaning of each of the symbols and the understanding of how each played a part in acting as a portal or doorway for the healing energy to flow through. These symbols are central to Reiki, together with a series of attunements or initiations into the energy. The Reiki attunements are a very ancient process for fine tuning the physical and etheric bodies to a higher vibratory level and opening a purified channel in the body for the energy to pass through. Once this channel has been opened, it will remain open for the rest of a persons life and can be activated simply through touch or the use of the symbols. Reiki energy is drawn through the body of the healer. When giving a treatment the energy moves through the purified channel within the healer, transmuting any energy blocks within the healer as it passes through, before moving into the clients energy system. During the treatment the energy continually feeds and balances both the healer and the client. As a consequence the channel is never drained when giving a healing, because they too are treated in the process. The technique or practice of Reiki is so simple it can be learned over a two day period, during which students are attuned into the energy, explore the roots of Reiki and are taught how to give themselves and others a treatment. As a natural extension it works in co-operation with all forms of body work disciplines and techniques, for example: massage, reflexology, aromatherapy etc. Those of us who connect with this energy on a regular basis cannot help but notice the changes it brings into our lives. Often these changes are instigated through the energy opening up and expanding our sensory filters (what we see, hear, feel, smell and taste), making us more aware of our limiting thoughts and beliefs, then showing us how we can become more balanced and whole, through this process we begin to naturally connect with and strengthen our intuitive and psychic abilities. |
